Web of Science Starter API - Setup Guide
The Web of Science Starter API provides data, analytics, insights, workflow tools, and bespoke professional services to researchers and the entire research community.
To use this API, you need to register and obtain an API key from the Clarivate Developer Portal.
How to request your API Key
- Create a Clarivate Account
Start by visiting the Clarivate Developer Portal
- If you are a new user, click Sign Up → Register
- Use your SUSS email address, as this may give you access to institutional benefits
- If you already have an account, simply click Sign In
- Register Your Application
After logging in:
- Go to the Applications section in the top menu
- Click on Register a New Application
- Enter Application Details
You will need to provide the following information:
- Application ID – a unique identifier
- Application Name – a clear and descriptive name
- Application Description
In the description, explain:
- How you plan to use the API
- What kind of data you want to retrieve or display
- Mention your institution (Singapore University of Social Sciences – SUSS)
- Configure Application Settings
- Select “Public: Single Page Application (browser-based app)” as the Client Type
- Do not enable OAuth 2.0 flows (no redirects are required for this setup)
- Subscribe to the API
- Navigate to the APIs section
- Select Web of Science Starter API → Information
- Scroll down to the Application section
- Click Subscribe for your registered application
- Wait for Approval
- The approval process may take up to two days
- You will receive a confirmation email once your subscription is activated
- After approval, your API key will be available for use
- There are 2 available plans to choose from.
- Free Trial – For anyone. Up to 50 requests/day. No “times cited” info. Good for personal use.
Free Institutional Member – For members of subscribing organizations. Up to 5,000 requests/day with “times cited” data.
